COLOR JAX BLUE

An initiative led by curator, artist, and arts advocate Shawana Brooks, Color Jax Blue brings Black artists and voter advocacy groups together to inspire citizens of Jacksonville, Florida to unite and turn out the vote. With a vast roster of artists, amplifiers, and partners across the city, Color Jax Blue presents an exciting model for how artists can band together to ignite political change within their community. This project showcases Black stories in ways that reflect both the opportunities that come from civic participation, and the consequences of abstaining—in order to create lasting change in Jacksonville, a historically conservative city.

ShapeUp2

SHAPE UP THE VOTE

Shape Up The Vote empowers barbers to engage their clients in conversations about participating in the upcoming election. Barbers are local leaders who are embedded in our communities—precisely the kinds of voices we are likely to listen to. Shape Up The Vote provides barbershops with a "kit" (registration forms, voter rights info, and promotional materials) and guides them on how to encourage their clients to vote. The program is rooted in Pennsylvania, and based in Philadelphia with solid traction: over 100 barbershops have enrolled in the program so far, and Shape Up the Vote will also mail physical registration kits to any barber in the country.

FutureCoalition

FUTURE COALITION

Built by and for youth activists, Future Coalition is a national network fostering community and collaboration among youth leaders. For The Strange's Infusion Grants, we are specifically supporting Future Coalition's Texas Fellow and community organizer, Hodan E. Barreh. Hodan is working with numerous partners to develop a "Voter Clinc" in Austin, TX to combat voter suppression efforts that adversely affect African American and Indigenous populations in the city. The clinic will offer high-level assistance from lawyers, as well as election-day transportation, document translation, and assistance with polling place identification. Hodan will also be partnering with Women’s March Texas and other local organizations on a series of virtual trainings that recruit young people of color to assist with voter registration.

Carla’sQuince2

CARLA'S QUINCE

This virtual theatre-based experience was developed with an ensemble of theatre artists to increase Latinx participation in the United States' electoral process. Through a multimedia Quinceañera, Carla’s Quince takes an action-oriented approach to engaging young, unregistered Latinx voters, while providing space for individuals to better understand how their voting choices directly affect their communities. While many digital campaigns were nominated for Infusion Grants, this initiative felt especially impactful given that its target audience is younger unregistered Latinx voters, who could make a huge difference in this election and others moving forward. The team has also partnered with universities and theater companies to tour the show to swing states, ensuring it can have as wide of an impact as possible.
